Lapping External Cylinders

To lap a ceramic cylinder to a polish finish, using no oil based products, we would suggest trying the following procedure:

  1. Create a Ring Lap of Kemet Iron. This involves cutting a Kemet IronRod into the correct thickness, and boring out a hole in the KemetIron Rod to the correct diameter so that the ceramic cylinder can fitin the Kemet Iron Rod. Kemet Iron rods are sold in ø 25mm,ø50mm and ø 75mm. The Ring Lap should be split at one side. TheRing Lap should then be tightened in a suitable device as shown inthe diagram below.
  2. Apply Kemet Diamond Compound 8 Micron Type W (8-W-C2) tothe Kemet Iron Lap.
  3. Slide the ceramic cylinder up and down the Kemet Iron Ring Lap.
  4. Clean off ceramic cylinder using solvent or ultrasonic cleaner.
  5. Create another Ring Lap of Kemet Iron using step 1.
  6. Apply Kemet Diamond Compound 3 Micron Type W (3-W-C2) tothe Kemet Iron Lap.
  7. Slide the ceramic cylinder up and down the Kemet Iron Ring Lap.
  8. Clean off ceramic cylinder using solvent or ultrasonic cleaner.

Note: Cylinder must be rotated while moving up and down lap. For example, for 1" cylinder, rotate at 150 rpm.
